On what was once the walking trail to Wairoa is Punakērua or Tait's Beach, a beautiful scenic spot with golden sand. The inland swamp rose four metres during the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Moa bones, kumara pits and signs of early Māori habitation have been discovered here.
Visitors to Tait's beach can enjoy fishing, crayfishing and some lovely walks, there is certainly plenty to explore!
This secluded spot is also ideal for surfers with an exposed beach break that consistently delivers great waves
