A great spring/summer day trip, pack a picnic, walking shoes and swimwear for a splash in the stream.

Not far from SH50 11km south of Ongaonga, Monckton Bush is a small reserve on the banks of the Tangarewai stream. The land was donated in 1975 by G.I.Monckton for protection as a reserve.

The 1.5-2 hour walking track figures eight through 16.5 ha of mixed podocarp and beech remnant forest. Native birds are plentiful, with spring being a good time to visit as tūi and bellbirds are attracted to the many flowering kowhai trees. The car park is a grassed area next to the stream; a great spot for your picnic with a covered seating area and toilets. In the summer the stream is ideal for a paddle.

Due to flooding damage, the bridge that used to cross the stream was removed so wet feet may be unavoidable. The stream is easily crossed under normal conditions, just be aware that after heavy rain the stream can rise quickly. If the water is flowing fast, or you can’t see the stream bottom, don’t cross – come back another time. The rest of the track is well constructed and is easily walked as it climbs and descends, following the picturesque Tangarewai Stream.
