The twin Kaweka lakes - Lake Rototuna and Lake Rotoroa - are ecologically and botanically significant because of the large number of plant species and vegetation types in the surrounding area. The bush-fringed lakes are an attractive place for picnics, fishing and walks. Depending on the water level there is usually a sandy beach.

The track to the lakes heads left from the carpark. It passes through kanuka and hardwood forest and after 30 minutes branches left and descends to the western lake. Be sure to check the track status on the Department of Conservation website before setting out.

Getting there

Drive west on Napier-Taihape Road for approx 1 hour, turn right into unsealed Kuripapango Road (just after Blowhard Bush) and follow 10 mins to DOC signposted car park. The track to the lakes heads left from the carpark (no toilet facilities).
