The Farndon Heritage Trail takes visitors through areas that have been historically associated with orchard and fruit growing industry in Hawke's Bay, as well as some sites of Māori significance.
The route touches the Ngaruroro River in several places. This river is significant for its numerous floods and their effect on the Hastings region in its past and more recent history. The name of the Farndon Trail is taken from one of the roads in the area and its related land and building features. Farndon is a village in England where the sweetheart of a young surveyor of this local region lived.
