The Central Hawke's Bay coastal trail leads you through a countryside where once rivers and streams were deep and navigable. Here were swamps, fern, manuka and more bush cover; the hills still rose to well over 300 metres before dropping dramatically to the roar of the sea, with its cliffs, inlets and beaches.
