An approximate 40minute drive southeast from Waipawa or Waipukurau through the Central Hawke's Bay countryside takes you past historic churches, picturesque woolsheds and stunning country landscapes to finally glimpse the south Pacific Ocean before descending down the hill to Blackhead beach.

In the peak of summer, Blackhead beach is a popular day trip from Hastings and Napier favoured for it’s easy access to Te Angiangi Marine Reserve at its northern end. Hawke's Bay's only marine reserve spans between Blackhead and Aramoana Beach. The rockshelves of Te Angiangi Marine Reserve are great for exploration at low tide at any time of the year but for the best experience pack the snorkels and goggles. From Blackhead at low tide, you can even walk all the way around to Aramoana beach - a roughly 6km return trip.

In the cooler months, Blackhead is peaceful with only the odd local enjoying a stroll, walking dogs and enjoying the scenery. You will often have the beach to yourself, shared only with local wildlife including seals, various birds, stingrays and other aquatic life.

There is plenty of parking, but the only facilities are at the local campground, accessible by fording a stream. There is no ‘freedom camping' at Blackhead and camping is only permitted in the ‘Blackhead Beach Camping Ground'.
