Pack some snacks, water, hats and sunscreen. And enjoy the serenity. So much serenity.
Probably the longest walk on the list (about 90mins return), but the prize of Shine Falls is worth it. You'll initially traverse farmland then low-land forest, and there are also a couple of hills on the way. But there's bridges to cross, weta hotels to inspect, and informative signage to stop and read. The waterfall pool is a little chilly, but makes for great family snaps!
A short, sharp ascent to the top of Mokotahi Hill is rewarded with spectacular views back across Māhia and out over the waters of Hawke Bay. The trail is fairly well maintained, but perhaps don't let the younger ones get too far ahead as you wouldn't them to stroll too far off course.
Park up at the covered picnic area near the carpark before or after taking in the easy A'Deanes Bush loop track. The focal point is the famous 34m high tōtara tree, which makes for great photos as everyone counts how many arms it takes to wrap around it's mighty trunk. If you're in a position to hang around for dusk, you might even catch a glimpse of the local colony of long-tailed bats emerging to feed.
An easy walk with an abundance of wildlife to spot, Ahuriri Estuary is an important sanctuary for a variety of wading birds. The estuary has a fascinating history - the story of which is told in a series of informative signage. At low tide, look out for the small crabs emerging from the mud banks.
There's the famous Peak summit to aim for, and you absolutely should. But there's also a host of other incredible walks in the wider Te Mata Park precinct that criss-cross this amazing regional asset. Little legs will enjoy the Piwakawaka / Green Walk, which includes the Small Redwoods Grove, or the slightly longer Big Redwoods / Purple Trail. Great photo spots!
Dozens of murals adorn the walls of a range of buildings around Napier CBD and Ahuriri, created in 2016 and 2017 as part of a worldwide project to draw attention to the beauty and plight of the world's oceans. Featuring works from local, national and international artists, you can choose to walk to as few or as many as you like - depending on the stamina of your sidekicks!
