Explore Wairoa township

The largest township in the district, Wairoa is full of hidden gems to uncover. Stroll along Wairoa River’s embankment, picnic at Pilot Hill, explore the delightful shops, let the kids run wild on the destination playground, visit Wairoa Museum, snap photos next to the solid Kauri lighthouse and pick up a treat from one of Hawke’s Bay’s most popular bakeries – there’s so much to do!

Mōrere Hot Springs

A treat not to be missed – gorgeous hot and cold springs set amid 364 hectares of rain forest. Rare in the world of hot springs, the Mōrere Springs produce 250,000 litres a day of hot ancient sea water. Known for its therapeutic values, the water is piped to a series of public and private hot pools. It is definitely worth taking a walk on any of the various walks in the Mōrere Scenic Reserve, from 10-minute walks up to three hours - the dense virgin rain forest is home to a wide range of native birds.

Take a hike in Wairoa

Wairoa is home to many of the region's best walks - from the wonders of the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk of New Zealand and the many nearby trails in Te Urerewa, to the lush Māhia and Mōrere scenic reserves, and the scenic Wairoa River Walkway, you'll find options aplenty to suit all fitness levels - including for little legs.

Discover Wairoa Museum

Housed in the old Union Bank of Australia Building, the small yet notable Wairoa Museum affords a glimpse into the history of the area. The museum features photographic collections illustrating the Māori and European history of the area from 1890s through to present day. You can also discover a very strong collection of Māori taonga, New Zealand war flags from Scotland and an interactive Discovery Space including educational activities and resources.

Relax in Māhia Peninsula

No trip north is complete without making the short trip out to Māhia Peninsula. This family-friendly holiday destination is a popular spot for those wanting a coastal experience without the crowds. The peninsula has a number of stunning beaches that provide a natural playground if you like to surf, swim, dive and fish - here you’ll discover a mix of sandy and rocky beaches that make the perfect place to bunker down for a day or two.

Be sure to make the brief ascent of Mokotahi Hill for stunning view of the peninsula and right across Hawke Bay. There's also easy access to several scenic walking tracks. With the Māhia Beach holiday park and loads of houses to rent, a well stocked store, pub, bottle store and food carts, it's a destination you may never want to leave!
